A Never Ending Fog

It was a beautiful morning today: I could hardly see where I was going.

Too often in this world we’re surrounded by things that tell us where to go; sure, even with ¼ mile visibility I knew where I was going, I’ve driven to work many times! Yet still, there’s wonderment behind feeling out of control, like we could get lost if we wanted to.

Humans spent years trying to find their way to the next step and now we live in a world immersed with GPS and iPhone navigation (I’m guilty of the latter). Sailors would struggle to chart their course over the seas to ‘new lands’ just to fulfill a greater purpose and all we have to do is enter an address and have a computer’s voice guide us to our destination. We’re lacking adventure. We’re lacking passion. There aren’t anymore ‘new lands’ to discover for most of us, we’re not explorers: but should we be?

I challenge you to become an Explorer. Find a New Land. Turn off your GPS and drive; you can always turn it back on! Some of the more sage advice I’ve received from peers came from a friend who told me: “Andrew, you need to have an adventure.” She was right; I did. Now I’m telling you. Just because you won’t discover the next America doesn’t mean you won’t meet amazing people along your adventure.

Change is never a bad thing. Maybe we should live our lives like we’re driving through A Never Ending Fog! When I was getting close to downtown Grand Rapids (where I work and play) the fog was beginning to burn off as the sun rose even further. Who knows; if you start having adventures, become an Explorer and discover New Lands…then maybe you’ll make new friends along the way. Maybe you’ll see new experiences and open your horizons. I know it’s worked for me, so turn the GPS off and wait for the fog to burn off on its own. Eventually, the sun will take care of it.
